Disaster Strikes Nigeria

Nigeria has recently faced severe devastating floods which can well be termed as the worst flooding faced by a Western African nation in the past decade. They have affected over three million people in 36 states. Over one million people have been displaced with damage to over 300,000 houses. Many states have witnessed farms going under water. The flood has not only left millions including children homeless, but also taken away their means of livelihood. Plantations and livestock have been lost. The humanitarian situation is dire with homes going under water and people using canoes to reach their homes and stay guard to keep their belongings safe from the threat of theft.

With the floods and standing water, the threat of water borne and mosquito borne diseases increases exponentially. This is made worse by the fact that the nation was facing an outbreak of cholera when the flooding started. Reported population movements from places with cholera outbreaks to places not yet affected has led to increased risk of further spread of cholera.

This unprecedented damage by floods can be attributed to multiple factors:

  • Poor drainage systems in residential areas
  • Channels clogged with waste debris
  • Emergency release of excess water from dams both in Nigeria and in neighbouring Cameroon
  • Indiscriminate construction on natural flood paths and storm water paths
  • Unprecedented heavy rainfall

Since the flooding began in early summer (July), it has been unabated and is expected to continue through the month of November. There are concerns that one of the major secondary effects of these savage floods could be acute food shortage. Added to the flood situation, stoppage of grain importations occasioned by the Russian-Ukrainian war is another contributing factor to the probable food shortage in the near future.

The only positive development this flood has shown is that it has hampered the activities of terrorists as they are no longer able to use their vehicles to launch attacks on non-suspecting civilians. At the same time, the armed forces have been successful at launching attacks on their hideouts and capturing them.
